Extended Office Hours for Vaccinations
There are many reasons that vaccination rates in a community may drop. One of these reasons is lack of access to vaccinations. There are many parents/patients who are unable take off of work or leave their workplace for long period of time in order to take their children in during your office hours. This often results in missed or late immunizations. Physicians may want to consider implementing the following strategies to increase vaccine access for their patients. Some of these suggestions could be particularly useful during influenza season, when more people will need to be vaccinated in a shorter amount of time.
- Direct patients to immunization clinics and pharmacies when the office is typically closed.
- Extend your office hours one day a week or open on a day when the office is typically closed (e.g., evenings and weekends).
- Allow walk-in or same-day appointments for immunization administration only .
- During influenza season (or any time of year), create a “vaccine only” clinic that runs during your normal office hours.
