Standing orders allow nurses, physician assistants and other medical professionals to administer vaccinations according to an institution- or physician-approved protocol without a physician's exam. This strategy, recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and others, has been shown to increase immunization rates among adults. Standing orders can be used in a variety of settings including inpatient and outpatient facilities, long-term-care facilities, correctional facilities, pharmacies and adult workplaces. Although not as commonly used, standing orders can also be put in place for childhood and adolescent immunizations.
